National Aboriginal Day
On National Aboriginal Day (June 21st) , Allan Brooks Nature Centre and Stephen Hawking’s the Harris Hawk made an appearance in Armstrong for the Aboriginal Celebrations! The Armstrong Museum was open to the public and had a aboriginal themed craft for all of the kids to participate in. One of the biggest hits besides Stephen Hawking’s was the Bannock! At the Chamber of Commence Welcome Centre there was plain bannock and cinnamon bannock with homemade jam! If anything… we will be apart of this event next year to gobble up more of the delicious traditional aboriginal dessert!
Sunshine Festival: Downtown Vernon
Allan Brooks Nature Centre and the Nature Trailer made an appearance in Downtown Vernon at the Sunshine Festival that took place at Nature’s Fare Markets! The nature trailer was on site, which always has the kids intrigued by our fascinating stations. A big thanks to the ABNC team who manned the BBQ, Tent, Nature Trailer, and Inspector the Owl at the Sunshine Festival. This year we raised $1,200 from the BBQ for our Raptor Programs! Thank you to everyone who came to the Sunshine Festival and participated in the rainy day we had.
In addition to the great BBQ and bouncy castle totals of $1200, we received a total of $1, 577.71 in Nature’s Fare receipts, which brings $47.48 of funding to ABNC. Great results for one day! We could still use some help! If any of our members, their family members, friends or co-workers shop at Nature’s Fare please feel free to gather them and drop them off at the Nature Centre
Okanagan Spirits Craft Distillery
On May 22nd, Allan Brooks Nature Centre and Stephen the Harris Hawk made an appearance at the Okanagan Spirits Craft Distillery along with SunFM! On location, we were spreading the word about our upcoming Raptor Weeks and engaging the families with Stephen, the Harris Hawk, to see first hand what some of the Raptors will look like at our Raptor Weeks. Thank you to everyone who came and a special thanks to SunFM who was live on location during this event! We look forward to having another event at the Okanagan Spirits Craft Distillery.
ONA Sockeye Fry Release
Allan Brooks Nature Centre was in Penticton on May 18th for the Nation Alliance Sockeye Fry Release. The turnout was unbelievable! Kids and families were able to witness the Fry being release into the channel and then ventured to the park side for activities. Over 300 kids were at this event enjoying all of the different tent activities and the Nature Trailer was one of the biggest hits! Stephen, the Harris Hawk, was a popular item at this event and we have the privilege to bring him along side to each event with his hawk handler, Ashley. Seeing how engaged these kids were in all of the nature aspects and activities we had at this Nature Trailer event was truly unbelievable and is why we love doing what we do!
